Stryker brigade draft EIS released
The army has released
a draft environmental impact statement for
its proposed Hawaii Stryker brigade. Written
comments on the draft study will be accepted through Nov. 19, which environmentalists
criticize as the bare minimum and
not enough time to adequately
review the 1000 page (plus appendices)
document, which represents "a dramatic increase in the military footprint in the
islands." The Advertiser reports that "The draft environmental study says
training-related fires could have a 'significant impact' on sensitive species
and habitats, and that the direct and indirect effects of training would be
habitat disturbance, and destruction of endangered plants." A series of public
meetings on the draft have also been scheduled. Visit the Army's website on the
EIS.Legislation to revive a
program that assists veterans of
native Hawaiian ancestry, by removing a cap
imposed on the Native American Veterans Direct Loan Program, has been approved
by Congress and gone to President Bush for his signature.
