Military expansion
The Advertiser reports
that "The Senate yesterday gave final approval to $772.3 million in defense
spending for Hawai'i — about $89 million more than the total approved last
year," including $80.5 million for projects directly tied to having an Army
Stryker brigade of about 300 armored vehicles at Schofield Barracks. The Pacific
Business News has a breakdown
of the budget. But Tony Castanha writes
a letter
in the Star-Bulletin that the vast majority of those who testified at the Army's
hearings opposed the Stryker brigade proposal, and Lynn Nakkim's letter
in the Advertiser says the Stryker brigade will cause economic harm to the Big
Island.
