Modern and ancient science at Mauna Kea

The Advertiser has a piece on how the $28 million NASA-funded Mauna Kea Astronomy Education Center currently under construction will include unique exhibits that "attempt to connect high-tech scientific discoveries with ancient Hawaiian cultural traditions... The Hawaiian culture will be well-represented at the center, alongside the latest astronomy research. For example, an exhibit titled 'Origins' will explain the Hawaiian Kumulipo creation chant and the big-bang theory, which both speak of light and life springing from darkness. The 'Voyages' exhibit will detail modern space exploration and discovery while giving Polynesian voyagers their due."

Nice to recognize the remarkable achievements of Hawaiian science, but I doubt Kanaka Maoli who have for years protested the reckless exploitation of this sacred summit by western scientists will find much satisfaction in a couple of displays...

Speaking of which, Na Maka O Ka 'Aina's new documentary, MAUNA KEA - TEMPLE UNDER SIEGE, will be screening at the Maui Film Festival twice this week. CNN will be covering the film festival for four days and may do a story on the Mauna Kea piece.

Wednesday, June 16 and Sunday, June 20
Both at 7:30 p.m. at the McCoy Theater, Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Kahului
