Iz bust unveiled - E Ala E, ea
The bronze
bust of "Braddah Iz" Israel
Kamakawiwoʻole was unveiled
yesterday in Waiʻanae. Star-Bulletin also has some nice photos
from the event. Iz was Hawaiiʻs legendary singer whose music gained
worldwide exposure in such films as Finding Forrester and Meet Joe Black.
Iz was pro-independence, and he said so in
his music and concerts, in songs like "Living in a Sovereign
Land" and "E
Ala E." On his introduction to "Lover of Mine" on the live album
Iz: The Man and His Music, he says "... us guys go Mainland, or actually
when we go to America..." correcting himself and sending a subtle message, to
knowing laughter by audience members; like Iz many of us use America rather than
Mainland to refer to that continent and country over there, neither of which
Hawaii is a part of. We the voices
behind the faceOf the Hawaiian
Nation, the Hawaiian RaceRise for
justice the day has comeFor all our
people to stand as one, E Ala E, ea,
