Hawaii taro production hits record low

that "Hawaii taro production declined to a record low 5 million pounds in 2003,
down 18 percent from 2002, the Hawaii Department of Agriculture reports. The
previous record low was 5.5 million pounds in 1997. Farm prices remained at a
record high average of 54 cents per pound for 2003. But with lower production,
the total farm value of taro sales fell 18 percent to $2.7 million. Most taro is
made into poi, and taro for processing totaled 4.8 million pounds in 2003, down
17 percent from the previous year."
