Battle in the taro patch
The
Honolulu
Weekly has an interesting
article
from last week's edition (now online) about
the challenges facing taro farmers, including the monopolization and control of
the industry by profit-driven millers, with very little trickling down to the
farmers, and other forces that are driving farmers out of the business.
"Hawai’i lost 60 small taro farms between 1994 and 2004, bringing the
total down to about 130. At the same time, the amount of land planted with taro
plummeted from 550 to 370 acres."
