Save Akaku

Save Akaku

I want to draw your attention to the Save Akaku website and their new blog. Akaku is Maui's local cable access channel that is under attack and imminent threat of takeover by forces (led by Maui land developer Everett Dowling) that want to cut off or control the programming because it gives a forum to challenge their pro-development agendas and express alternative viewpoints. This is a bit off topic, but not really because of the valuable programming related to Hawaiian culture and politics that Akaku offers, including the Voices of Truth series that I have posted often here. And the station also provides important training for Hawaiians to gain media skills.

There's a meeting coming up August 26 at which the "hostile takeover" may be completed, and according to the website, many or all of the staff, officers, and members of the Board of Directors will be replaced.

Thru the website/blog they are putting out a call for support, which includes a request for a good lawyer, but there are other action steps to contact public officials, show up at the Aug. 26 meeting, donate to the legal fund, etc.

So please go check out this site, read some of the background about why Akaku matters and the threat it faces, and do what you can to help support Akaku, and spread the word. Mahalo.
