GMO protests on Moloka'i

The Maui News reports on the GMO issue heating up on Molokai.
About 20 protesters of genetically modified organisms in farm operations on Molokai were allowed into a company meeting of Monsanto Hawaiian Research on Thursday, but they left when they couldn’t get answers from executives.

And in what comes across to me as almost too much as a promotional piece quoting only the Monsanto rep without really addressing the many questions (Harry Eagar is my least favorite reporter there for balance or context), the lead story still provides useful details on Hawaii's role producing seed crop for GMO worldwide and the relative scale of the industry here.
the Hawaii segment of the [GMO seed crop] business has expanded by about 15 percent per year, and the total value last year was $60.2 million, employing about a thousand people.

That puts seed crops second among island diversified agriculture, about equal to fruits and vegetables but behind flowers.

The $60 million is also roughly the value of sugar cane at harvest, although once through the mills, the added value puts sugar well ahead.

It may not be too many years, though, before seed crops grown in Hawaii catch up to sugar in value. Mark Leidy, executive vice president for Monsanto’s worldwide manufacturing, says the company plans for "substantial" new investment in Hawaii in the next five years.

This is serious stuff done in secret, and most folks are totally unaware of the scale of GMO crops being grown here. I'm glad Ritte and friends are shining some light on it to get people talking about it.

Update 11/10: MauiTime Weekly agrees with my take on the quality of Eagar's journamalism on this issue, comparing him to NY Times Judith Miller, and raising the questions about GMO safety that Eagar should have, were Monsanto not leading him around by the nose.
