Makahiki Celebration at Ulupo Heiau 12/17

Subject: 4th ANNUAL MAKAHIKI CELEBRATION AT ULUPO HEIAU - SAT. DEC. 17
Aloha kakou,
The Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club, Pa Ku`i A Holo, Hui o Lono Makahiki, the Kailua Historical Society, Aloha Aina and Ahahui Malama I ka Lokahi are co-sponsoring the 4th annual Makahiki torchlight gathering at Ulupo Heiau on Saturday December 17 at 6:30 pm. A huakai (procession) led by Na Hula Amauka`a from Mokapu to Ulupo Heiau will take place bearing the banner of Akua Lono I ka Makahiki. Hawaiian organizations, Hawaiian Civic Clubs, Halau Hula who would like to join the huakai or at the entrance to Ulupo Heiau are asked to bring a ho‚okupu of native plants or a gift of hula or oli. After the ho`okupu presentation, leaders of the host groups will share their mana‚o of the Makahiki and the issues of their concern in the Kailua Ahupua‚a. An awa toasting among the invited guests will take place and a pa`ina will be served to those in attendance. The next day on Sunday, Hawaiian arts and crafts, games, poi making and lomi will be demonstrated.
Groups or individuals who would like to participate in the preparation of the Makahiki at Ulupo Heiau and/or be part of the ho`okupu ceremony are asked to call Chuck "Doc" Burrows at 595-3922 or email chuckb@hawaii.rr.com. If you wish to help with the imu preparation call Kia Carter at 223-3249 or email dallascarter@mac.com. If you could kokua with the pa`ina call Hanaloa Helela at 225-1108 or email hemanumalia@hotmail.com. There will be a planning meeting at the Windward YMCA on Friday Dec. 9 from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. All are invited to come or send your organization representatives.
