Hui Malama ordered to appear Tuesday

More today from the Advertiser on Judge Ezra's order (PDF) for Hui Malama's director Edward Halealoha Ayau and its board members to appear Tuesday "to show cause why they should not be held in contempt of court" for failing to disclose the precise location of the moepu in the Kawaihae caves artifacts dispute.
Rather than disclosing the locations of the objects, Hui Malama members Wednesday issued declarations explaining that their religious and cultural beliefs bar them from revealing the exact whereabouts.
[...]
Hui Malama is not seeking to show disrespect against either Ezra or the court, [Ayau] said. The group simply believes its first obligation is to its ancestors, not to the court, he said.

Ayau also reiterated that he stands ready to go to jail for contempt if the judge orders it. "If that's what court decides is our penalty ... then that's what's going to happen," he said.

The Star-Bulletin story includes quotes from a statement released yesterday by the two Native Hawaiian groups on the other side of the dispute, the Royal Academy of Traditional Arts and Na Lei Alii Kawananakoa, criticizing Hui Malama for making "misleading and evasive statements" and being "willing to hijack Hawaiian culture and history." The statement says that "Important cultural artifacts were stored in caves to protect them from destruction and loss. They were being preserved for future generations, not to be buried and lost forever or stolen and sold on the black market."

(In case you are planning to attend the hearing, Doug White notes the difference in the hearing time listed in the court order, 10 a.m., versus the S-B article which says it is at 9 a.m. I would assume the court order is correct.)
