Ayau must be released; Ayau no hero

The Advertiser has two opposing commentaries on Hui Malama and the imprisonment of its executive director Edward Halealoha Ayau for refusing to disclose to the court the location of 83 moepu (funerary items) reinterred at the Kawaihae cave complex.

The Nation of Hawai'i, Pu'uhonua 'O Waimanalo Village and the Native Hawaiian Advisory Council (three of seven claimants—out of 13 total—who oppose the removal of the moepu from the caves) express their reasons why repatriation of the moepu is completed and should not be reopened and why Ayau should be released, and criticize the roles of La'akea Suganuma and Na Lei Ali'i Kawananakoa in the process. On the other side, Nanette Naioma Napoleon criticizes Hui Malama for its lack of tolerance for differing opinions and says Ayau is no hero. Rather than excerpt from their commentaries here, I encourage you to read them fully for yourselves.

The Star-Bulletin also has a couple letters on the issue, one comparing the original theft of the moepu with stealing "precious war medals from Punchbowl cemetery or even Arlington National Cemetery." (Oh, and read Walter Ritte's letter on chemical companies farming on Moloka'i while you're at it.)

And for 'olelo readers, the Star-Bulletin's Kauakukalahale column in 'olelo Hawai'i, authored by Laiana Wong a me Kekeha Solis, also addresses this issue in historical context. The synopsis they give is: "Hawaiian leaders seem to always get hō'ino 'ia, from earlier times till now."

Folks who may want to write to Ayau to express support or anything else can apparently use this address:
