Living Culture
A couple letters
in the Advertiser
today on Hui Malama and the Kawaihae cave
artifacts. Makua Keale talks about the "living culture" of Hawaiians deciding
the fate of the artifacts; and Norbert Perez, president of the Bring Our Ancestors Home
Foundation, which repatriates Chamori remains and sacred artifacts
from the Bishop Museum and elsewhere, says, "Mr. Ayau and Hui Malama have been
the forefront heroes in the Hawaiian iwi issue," and asks: "Where were these
other claimants when Hui Malama was fighting for the inclusion and recognition
of Native Hawaiians in the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation
Act? Where were these claimants when Hui Malama was fighting to secure the
repatriation of Hawaiian remains and sacred artifacts from the Museum of Natural
History in Chicago? And many more significant repatriation
efforts."
