Praise and criticism for Hui Malama

The Advertiser has a pair of articles today about Hui Malama and the Kawaihae Caves objects dispute.

One article provides background on Hui Malama, with quotes from those who both praise and criticize the group. And the other provides a sort of FAQ on some main points of contention in the dispute. One of the issues addressed is whether the transfer of the items from Bishop Museum to Hui Malama was really a 'loan,' but it seems to me the larger issue is the fact that Bishop Museum, having obtained the items knowing (PDF) that they were stolen from the burial caves in violation of law, had no legitimate claim to the items in the first place. The museum can't legitimately purport 'loan' something it never owned.

In the Advertiser letters Eric Po'ohina says, "The proper claimants of Hawaiian artifacts are the 'ohana who can prove that their family resided in the ahupua'a during the time the artifacts were buried," and also that "U.S. federal courts have no business making decisions in regard to Hawaiian religious traditions."

(There's also a letter about the Kahana Valley Cultural Program as a "living park" to teach "anyone who wants to learn about Hawaiian culture and other Polynesian cultures. We offer instruction on lauhala weaving, Hawaiian games, poi pounding, lei making, etc.")

(BTW, I also missed this Advertiser article from Tuesday, about the parties agreeing to mediation and their initial progress. They are scheduled to give a progress report today to U.S. Magistrate Kevin Chang.)
