The Honolulu Academy of Arts invites
the public to its new exhibit: Life in the Pacific of the 1700s: The
Cook/Forster Collection of the Georg August University of
Gottingen.More than 350 objects -- for
both daily use and ritual -- were collected during the second and third Pacific
Ocean voyages of Captain James Cook (1728-79). These amazing works, made
largely before Cook's contact with the indigenous cultures, are extraordinary
for their inherent beauty, craftsmanship, and unique mana. Primarily from
Aotearoa (New Zealand), Tahiti, and Tonga, these authentic artifacts date from a
period in the eighteenth century. A small but critical part of the exhibition
comes from Hawai`i.The Honolulu
Academy of Arts will waive admission fee during the run of the exhibition --
