Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies University of Hawai`i at Mānoa 2645 Dole St Room 209A Honolulu HI 96822 PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 25, 2006 Kalo Patenting Symposium to be Held at Center for Hawaiian Studies The Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies will be hosting a symposium Friday, April 28, 2006 from 1 – 3 p.m. on the issue of kalo patenting and its impact on the community. The Center has invited kalo farmers and community leaders from around the state to voice their views on the issue. The public is encouraged to attend. This symposium, entitled "Understanding Kalonization," is one in a series of events aimed at providing the Native Hawaiian community opportunities to speak from their own personal experiences on biopropspecting, including the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and patenting efforts by state and corporate groups. On Thursday, April 27, 2006, from 5:30-8:30, Moloka`i residents and Native Hawaiian activists Hanohano Na`ehu and Kalaniua Ritte, known to their fans as "the Hemowai Brothers," will be showing an episode of their television show in Kuykendall 209 at the University of Hawai`i, Mānoa. The screening of the show, "the Hemowai Brothers: Episode 12" (which focuses on GMOs) will be followed by a question and answer session. The public is welcome to attend. The week's events will conclude with a day of activities at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa on Saturday, April 29, 2006. "Kukahi" will bring together community members from throughout the state in resistance to the University's efforts to conduct research on and patent kalo. "Kukahi" events will begin at 8:30 am at Bachman Hall and continue throughout the day. Questions about Kukahi should be directed to kukahistand@yahoo.com. For more information, contact Kehaulani Watson at watsont@hawaii.edu or (808) 392-1617. Posted: Wed - April 26, 2006 at 03:31 PM |
