Live 'Ahupua'a!
Living ahupua'a today is about actually being on
the land. rather than just driving from one place to another and living only in
our house and yard, from time to time, and more and more all the time, we need
to get out and walk around our neighborhood, and our watershed, and notice how
winds blows, and how water flows, and what grows. we patiently get to know the
land, and it slowly reveals itself. it responds, and tells its story, which is
also that of the kupuna who walked and worked the land before, and the gifts
they left behind: na pohaku, na meakanu, na inoa, na mo'olelo, na ho'ailona -
the stones, the plants, the names, the stories, the signs. When we begin to see
these things, then we can begin to know how to work with the land. And living
'ahupua'a also means living and working with our neighbors. laulima, doing
projects together that we all benefit from, sharing knowledge, cultivating
trust, building community, sharing good feelings among one another, being in
service to the land together. then we begin to actually live in the ahupua'a we
live in.
