UH Kalo patents terminated
Star-Bulletin
story
and
Advertiser
story
about UH filing "terminal disclaimers" with the U.S. Patent Office that
dissolved its proprietary interests in three varieties of kalo researchers had
created through cross-breeding (just to clarify this is
not GMO
despite the Advertiser's
somewhat reference misleading reference to
"genetically enhanced"). Walter Ritte and other activists that had been pressing
the university to give up the patents celebrated the victory by tearing up
copies of the patents. "Neither the University of Hawai'i nor anyone else in the
world has a proprietary or any other ownership interest in these three
varieties," [vice chancellor for research Gary] Ostrander said. "They're now
available for anybody in the world to use." What ever happened to the concern about another
entity like Monsanto patenting them that was originally UH's excuse?
Advertiser
editorial
mentions this also. Anyway, big kudos to Ritte and friends. And to the
university for listening.Doug also comments.
Update 6/22:
