Original Arago drawings at the Academy of Arts

Last month at Ala Kukui Retreat in Hana we hosted a slideshow lecture by Tricia Allen, author of Tattoo Traditions of Hawaii, which was quite fascinating, so I wanted to post this email sent out by her inviting folks to this Arago exhibition. For those interested in Hawaiian tattoo, or just getting a glimpse into old Hawaii, this will be worth seeing.

Subject: Original tattoo drawings by Arago at the Academy of Arts

Aloha All,

Also, I've recently had the honor of guest curating a small exhibition of the original Arago drawings of tattoo at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. This is the first time most of these images have been exhibited. The drawings are included in my book, but production costs dictated the small format, which does not do these drawings justice. Seeing the originals is a very different experience. These are NOT engravings! They truly are worth seeing. Many of the individuals are identified by name, and the clothing and hairstyles are also fascinating. The exhibition is upstairs in the John Dominis & Patches Holt Gallery (up the stair case near the cafe) and will be up through November 5th. There may be a closing party, since we did not have a formal opening. I'll keep you posted.

This is the first of two exhibitions I'm curating-- the second will include some other Arago drawings (specifically his drawings of heiau), as well as a number of original watercolors by Choris, who visited the islands in 1816. These are the last images of Hawai'i before the death of Kamehameha and arrival of missionaries. Some are unpublished, so they're new to most of us. These are beautiful images that show a number of heiau still in a pristine state. This exhibition will open toward the end of the year. Details to follow.

A hui hou,
Tricia
