Native Hawaiians seek to preserve culture through laws
There is a good AP article
in the
Star-Bulletin
today (also picked
up by the North County
Times (San Diego area)), covering the Hawaiian
culturally related bills currently going through the state legislature. The
bills are to "make sure Hawaiian words are spelled
correctly, legalize traditional tattooing and protect taro plants from genetic
alteration." Another would "establish Aha Moku councils across the islands,
which would give fishers, farmers and elders a voice in the state's natural
resource management." I have been remiss in not covering these more, and I'll
try to post some info about needed testimony when it comes up.
