IZ Tribute - Wonderful World
The
Advertiser
has a special tribute today to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole coinciding with the release
of the "Wonderful World" CD, with symphonic sound added to Iz's music, for the
10th anniversary of his passing. There's a 48-page insert in today's paper
including an exclusive free single CD of the title track, and a website with
lots of stories, video and music, including the ability to listen to the entire
12-song CD today and tomorrow before it goes on sale to the general public.
Here's the editor's background,
and the site is at iz.honoluluadvertiser.com.
One piece
talks about his activism through his music, including a controversy
"after he dedicated a concert to Bumpy Kanahele, an
advocate for an independent Hawaiian nation," because of the perception of "his
feeling about haoles." I have to say, it is obvious to me that Iz's friends who
reacted to his support for Bumpy misunderstood Bumpy. From the time I first met
him in 1993, Bumpy was preaching a message of inclusion, and brought a lot of
haole supporters into the movement. Iz's song "Living in a Sovereign
Land" was based on the Nation of Hawaii's 1994 Proclamation of
Restoration of the Independence of the Sovereign Nation State of Hawai`i (which
BTW says "The Independent and Sovereign Nation of Hawai`i will establish
procedures for according citizenship by means of naturalization to all people
who are habitual residents of Hawai`i as of today's
date.").Update
