Royal Hawaiian bandmaster: fluency; petition
Advertiser
columnist Bob Krauss has a piece
on why fluency in the Hawaiian language is an
important criterion for bandmaster of the Royal Hawaiian Band because of its
heritage, and the need to understand the kaona of the music. "The Royal
Hawaiian Band is not like any other band. It is the granddaddy of Hawaiian music
as we know it. Preserving this heritage is not easy. The minimum requirement
should be a director who speaks the language of the music." Makes sense to
me.This
article
reports that, "A group opposing Mayor Mufi Hannemann's decision to replace the
Royal Hawaiian Band's veteran bandmaster Aaron Mahi carried a petition with some
3,000 signatures to the mayor yesterday to ask him to reconsider."
Star-Bulletin
reports
on the petition as well.
