Did ancient Polynesians visit California?

Ancient migrations and contact between different peoples is a fascinating topic to me, and there's an interesting story in yesterday's San Francisco Chronicle about whether ancient Polynesians visited California.
Scientists are taking a new look at an old and controversial idea: that ancient Polynesians sailed to Southern California a millennium before Christopher Columbus landed on the East Coast.

Key new evidence comes from two directions. The first involves revised carbon-dating of an ancient ceremonial headdress used by Southern California's Chumash Indians. The second involves research by two California scientists who suggest that a Chumash word for "sewn-plank canoe" is derived from a Polynesian word for the wood used to construct the same boat.

The article says that opposition to this idea came from, among other things, the fact that "sailors from the west would have faced contrary currents and winds that would tend to push them in the wrong direction." Without knowing anything about that specifically, to me, it just seems like it would be remarkable for the Polynesians to travel back and forth with precision to tiny islands all over the Pacific for hundreds of years and NOT find the continents!

While it is valuable to find linguistic and physical evidence linking these cultures, I have heard of several oral histories that connect Polynesia and North America. In Kekula's own family, there is a fascinating story from her great-grand-uncle David Kaonohiokala Bray ("Daddy Bray") of a connection he made with the Hopi that verified clearly to him a Hopi/Polynesian connection, possibly in this same time period (500-700 AD), and it also involved the Chumash. Hmm....
