Book: When Strange Gods Call
The Alameda
Times-Star
features
a new novel by Pam Chun, an Alameda resident and native of Hawaii, entitled
When Strange Gods
Call that "incorporates Hawaiians' love of
ghost stories, the theme of family secrets and the conflict between modern-day
outlooks and ancient traditions. The book is set in 1970, just over a decade
after Hawaiian statehood." Chun says: "I wanted to show what had happened in
those 10 years, how the pendulum had swung the other way to a resurgence of
Hawaiian sovereignty. The people wanted to reclaim their history, art and
culture."
