Bush's Hawaii visit; Kamehameha; Kahoolawe
Bush arrived in Hawaii today, and the Advertiser
has an article
on the visit, including Governor Lingle's
plans to lobby on behalf of
federal
recognition for Hawaiians. Their editorial
calls on Bush to "pay particular attention to the issue of Hawaiian
self-determination," and the Star-Bulletin editorial
also urges Bush's support. This KHNL News 8 story mentions
that Hawaiian sovereignty advocates are expected to
protest.Meanwhile, plaintiffs against
Kamehameha Schools admissions
policy are arguing
that past injustices are not relevant to the case, while an op-ed
piece by former Hawai'i governor George Ariyoshi says the Schools'
admission preference is justified, and in the letters
section Jaimee-Jean Namahoe shares about learning Hawaiian culture and heritage
at Kamehameha Schools, and Michael Rath talks about King Kamehameha the man as
an imperialist.The Star-Bulletin reports
that "A formal ceremony is being planned at Iolani Palace on Nov. 12 to mark the
transfer of control of
Kahoolawe from the Navy to the state's
Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission." Kahoolawe was used by the Navy as a target
and training area from 1941 until 1990.
