Panel pushes Akaka bill, spreads misinformation
I didn't watch OHA's show on KITV last night
about federal recognition, so I can't report directly, but the
Advertiser
has a brief report,
which basically repeats OHA's lame explanations of the Akaka bill. Former state
Supreme Court associate justice Robert Klein talked about the bill as the
"yearning of a people," but it's actually more the yearning of the agencies that
depend on federal and state funding. A lot of people actually yearn to live free
as Hawaiians (nationals) and have their country back. But the new and disturbing
statement here is from "Native Hawaiian law expert" Melody MacKenzie: "McKenzie
said the case for Hawai'i's international independence was thwarted in a 2000
challenge at the Hague by the refusal of the United States to take part." She is
right that this case at
the Permanent Court of Arbitration was limited in this way, but that
is a specific restriction of the arbitration process, which is only one of
several venues for pursuing independence through legal and diplomatic means, and
was only one step in the international legal process. The PCA case didn't thwart
Hawaii's case for international independence, but rather provided a foundation
to move forward to other venues.
