Akaka bill wrangled in senate
The Advertiser
reports
that Hawaii's senators tried to get around a hold placed on the Akaka bill for
federal recognition of Native Hawaiians by attaching it as an amendment to a
piece of legislation related to class-action lawsuits, but the attempt has been
thwarted thus far by mostly partisan disputes over what types of amendments can
be attached, and the Hawaii lawmakers are not sure whether or not this is a
reaction to the Akaka bill itself. For those of us opposed to the Akaka bill, perhaps
now would be a good time to contact senators, particularly
Republicans, and urge them to oppose this amendment.
