Opposition greater than support for Akaka Bill
An interesting article in the Hawaii
Tribune-Herald today on the opposition
to the Akaka Bill. Once more we see how those who seek to eliminate
Hawaiian programs entirely, and those who seek to restore Hawaii's independence,
are strange bedfellows in opposing federal recognition, though for very
different reasons.But most
significantly, the article points out that at a hearing in the Senate Indian
Affairs Committee on the bill earlier this year,
four times as many letters and testimonies
were submitted against the bill than in favor of it
(24-8). This is just one piece of evidence
contradicting claims by various Hawaii leaders and politicians that Hawaiians
all support the bill.
