Aloha, Though presentations have become more sophisticated over the years, old and grievous errors persist. One of them is the use of the American racist appellation of Native Hawaiian. This term is used to corral Kanaka Maoli into a race or tribe distinction…and the emphasis is on “stinc”! Now, native (small n) would be more illuminating as the Kanaka Maoli would then be the people inhabiting the island long before the white man came and certainly long before the illegal and continued occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Reading the article with Native Hawaiian just lets the wind out of the sails of what could rightly be an educational article for anyone who loves Ko Pai Aina. N…ative is an “N” word no matter if the US loves it.
