Police monitoring "subversives and radicals”
Over at Poinography blog yesterday, Doug
notes
articles reporting that the Big Island police
department "overtly acknowledge[d] that officers spend 4% of their time
monitoring radical and subversive groups." The chief says that "the policy is
meant for anti-terrorism and anti-drug intelligence" and not political
activities, but refuses to change the language of the policy to reflect that
distinction. So, in light of the Maui police labeling a nonviolent
educational group seeking to protect natural resources of East Maui as a
potential "domestic terrorist organization," one wonders how much of this 4% is
spent monitoring Hawaiian groups.
