Hawaiian history education a must for newcomers

Glenn Coryell writes a letter in the Maui News responding to an earlier letter: "Hawaiians are at a very critical and important period of our history. We are working toward building and restoring a Hawaiian form of government while maintaining respect and honor to our past leaders. There are many different plans and many intelligent loving people giving their lives, money and energy toward the building of that new country. ... One day soon we will have our country and hopefully you will have your education."

Hawaiian history education a must for newcomers

A June 23 letter shows that once again there is a great need for better education, understanding, and respect between the host culture so misrepresented and people who think like the writer. This is a perfect example of why we should offer free Hawaiian history education to all newcomers to our island home.

The comments about King Kalakaua and Queen Lili'uokalani were not only untrue, but in very poor taste. Hawaiians are at a very critical and important period of our history. We are working toward building and restoring a Hawaiian form of government while maintaining respect and honor to our past leaders. There are many different plans and many intelligent loving people giving their lives, money and energy toward the building of that new country.

Please allow us the respect we have given newcomers for well over 100 years. I hope the writer is not like the fictional queen cited in the letter, "weak, arrogant, and failed as a leader."

Remember we are working with leaders of the United States to correct a grave injustice done to the Kingdom of Hawaii by the U.S. on Jan. 17, 1893. One day soon we will have our country and hopefully you will have your education.
