Comments on Kamehameha historically challenged

A June 8 letter concerning Kamehameha's conquest and unification of Hawaii appeared to be written by a historically challenged transplant.

King Kamehameha and Chief Piilani were destined to claim the undisputed rule over Maui. For many years the inhabitants of Maui were subject to the cruel rule of Piilani with the promise of the "Lonely One" to unify the two opposing factions.

The inhabitants were in anticipation of this engagement and were not simply on the beach fishing on that day. Kupuna have instilled the vision of Kamehameha's canoes approaching the mouth of Iao Stream in Paukukalo from Nakalele Point at Hookipa, which was described as an "armada" of canoes so tightly packed one could walk from Hookipa to Paukukalo. This was scarcely a surprise encounter.

In every civilized community there is a time when peace can only be obtained by force, hence I pray that the historically challenged segment of our population appreciates the opportunity to "say these things" as a result from the peace they enjoy, which came not freely.
