Kamehameha was much more than a warrior king

In a Maui News letter, Duane A. K. Asami provides another rebuttal to the earlier comparison of Kamehameha to Hitler and Saddam.

Kamehameha was much more than a warrior king

A June 8 letter likened Kamehameha I to Saddam Hussein and Adolf Hitler. I was too angry to write an immediate rebuttal.

From the time of Pa'ao, circa 1250 A.D., the Hawaiian Islands suffered untold carnage as a result of the state of feudalism that existed here. Kalaniopu'u invaded Maui three times. Kahekili attacked Hana. Keouaknahu'ula attacked a peaceful village in Kamehameha's district of Kohala and forced the women to eat dirt and pebbles before they were killed. Kamehameha stopped the 500 years of "border war" and much more.

He established training centers for kahuna la'au lapa'au (healers) and decreed that their services would be available to all at no compensation, in effect providing the people with free government-sponsored medical services.

He ordered that all people work and contribute to their communities, banning freeloaders. Under his rule, certain hours were designated for work but specific times of the day were allotted for recreation with no work allowed. Our psychologists have been saying for years that we must all find time to unwind and get away from it all once in a while. Kamehameha recognized this 200 years ago.

Anyone interested in reading more about the history of Hawaii might want to start with Samuel M. Kamakau's "Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii," written from firsthand accounts of people who lived during the time of Kamehameha. I also recommend "Kelahaupio, Kamehameha's Warrior" by Stephen Desha. Although the writing style can be a bit annoying, the story is excellent.
