Roberts not a Feddie?
Tuesday, in
noting
SCOTUS nominee John G. Roberts' role in arguing for the state in the Rice v. Cayetano
case, I asked "why were there conservative Federalist Society lawyers
arguing both
sides of this case?"
It has been widely reported that he is
a member of the Federalist Society.
But the
Washington
Post today
reports
today that he is in fact not a member, and
never has
been.A related question is why Roberts would not want to be a member.
Some conservatives said that a Federalist affiliation, while a definite plus within Bush administration circles, could only provoke hostile questions from Senate Democrats -- so Roberts, in keeping with his low-key approach to conservatism, just steered clear.
Interesting.UPDATE 7/24:
Well, maybe he was a member after
all.
