International law separate from domestic law

In response to the May 27 letter, "Just what does international law allow?":

I have just completed my third year as a Hawaiian Studies major at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In Hawaiian Studies, we came across the issue of international law quite a few times, being that the Hawaiian nation is in a similar situation with Iraq when it comes to our country being occupied by the United States.

Although I too do not know a lot about international law, I know enough to say that international law has nothing to do with domestic law. The issues the letter writer brought up about a government inflicting horror on its own people are domestic issues. International law only defines the relationship between two sovereign countries and does not deal with how the other country runs its government.

True, from a humanistic point of view, what the Iraqi government did to its people is horrible, but do not make it sound as if the United States' goal was to "save" the Iraqi people when its goal was to control Iraqi oil. I still believe that the United States should have nothing to do with Iraq. When I compare this with Hawaiian history, I noticed that the United States also portrayed itself as the savior of the Hawaiian nation when in reality the United States wanted control of Hawaii in order to control the Pacific front for their country. 'O ia ke kumu wale no, that is the only reason.

So to answer the writer's question, international law has no jurisdiction within the borders of a country, only the relationship between two countries.
