More details...

The Army Makua Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) represents an escalating assault on the 'aina and our community.

The Makua Draft EIS is a proposal for more bombs, more bullets, more fires, pollution and destruction. All three Army alternatives are to EXPAND training in Makua to include the use of incendiary munitions (tracers), larger types of high explosives, and Stryker attack vehicles. We denounce and protest any such abuse.

Our alternative, the community's preferred alternative is to cleanup, restore and return Makua. The Army EIS did not even consider this despite much testimony demanding this option.

One good thing about the Makua Draft EIS is that as flawed and imcomplete as it is, it still confirms what the community has said all along: that Army training has devastating impacts on the valley and the community. They admit that the proposed training would have "significant and unmitigable" impacts of fire, loss of native forest and species, release of more toxic chemicals and unexploded munitions, destruction of cultural sites, and obstruction of the community's land use plans.

Furthermore, The Army changed the scope of the proposed action. The Makua Draft EIS describes a different proposal from the one that the community commented on over a year ago. The Army has not completed required cultural site surveys. Like the Stryker hearings and UARC consultations, the Makua EIS hearings are a sham. We will resist!

Makua groups will announce that they will join with 'Ilio'ulaokalani, DMZ-Hawai'i / Aloha 'Aina and others on September 4, 2005 for the Ku I Ka Pono 2005 Convergence at Kukaniloko, birthing stones. This is a show of unity and commitment to protect sacred sites and natural resources from military expansion.
