STOP THE STRYKERS!Here's a message from the Not In Our Name
list:
Reminder: Don't miss the hearing on the Strykers at Turtle Bay on Tuesday evening, November 4! If you have a car and can offer a ride to others join the car caravan at Church of the Crossroads at 4:30 pm. If you don't have a car, catch a ride. The caravan will stop at Kam Shopping Center (near McDonalds) at 5:00 pm, and then at Windward City Shopping Center at 5:30. Signs on the cars will help raise awareness along the way! See the press release sent out by NION-Hawai`i today. STOP THE
STRYKERS!
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 3, 2003 From: NION (Not In Our Name) Hawai`i The damage to Hawai`i and its inhabitants from the Stryker Brigade has already begun, and the 20-ton machines haven't even arrived yet. With the arrests of 7 concerned individuals last week, the U.S. Army has shown the kind of respect they extend to anyone who questions their presence on the islands. NION Hawaii strongly rejects their police state tactics and calls for the Army to drop the trespassing charges against those trying to express themselves at a public meeting. The Army's tactic of holding public meetings at private venues, the visible presence of dozens of private security guards and policemen, and the arrests of those attempting to testify, is a blatant attempt to intimidate and limit dissent, calling into question the validity of the entire hearing process. NION Hawaii is organizing a car caravan to help pack the final hearing on the Stryker Brigade on Oahu, which will be held at Turtle Bay Resort Kahuku on Tuesday, Nov 4th. The car caravan will leave the Church of the Crossroads parking lot at 4:30 p.m. and will stop to pick up more vehicles/individuals at Kam Shopping Center in Kalihi (near McDonalds) at 5:00, and then at Windward City Shopping Center at the bottom of Likelike at 5:30 (near Flamingo's). The U.S.'s "war on the world" is a war for empire and is being waged against anyone who opposes U.S. plans for domination. The Strykers are urban assault vehicles developed for use in urban areas (they have tires instead of tracks and require streets for best operation). Today there is a growing movement of millions of people in countries like Iraq, the Philippines, Indonesia, Okinawa, who oppose the presence of the U.S. military in their countries and are determined to defend themselves against U.S. domination. NION-Hawai`i believes that the U.S. government's "endless war" against the people of the world is illegal and immoral, and opposes any plan to further militarize Hawai`i to carry out this war. Furthermore, few people yet understand the full impact of basing the Strykers in Hawai`i. The Strykers will have devastating effects on Hawai`i's environment, will decimate endangered species, and will destroy cultural sites. The thousands of tons of dust the vehicles will generate will endanger health; ammunitions will leave a legacy of toxins. NION Hawaii is proud to be part of a growing coalition opposed to basing the Stryker Brigade In Hawai`i and calls on other organizations and individuals who desire justice and freedom to join them.
