PROTEST STRYKER!

From an email:

Within 2 weeks the U.S. Army will very likely issue a formal “Record of Decision” to go forward with the Stryker Combat Brigade for Hawaii despite widespread public opposition expressed throughout the entire Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process. The EIS was a legal requirement but the process was a complete fraud. Hawaii’s senior senator, Daniel Inouye, said on June 18, 2003, months before the EIS public hearings, that he was assured “Hawaii will get its Stryker Brigade.” If you have not already expressed your opposition for the record, or you would like to add additional comments, now is the time to do it, before July 5th, 2004. Address your comments to Ms. Cindy Barger, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu Engineering District, Building 230, Ft. Shafter, HI 96858. Telephone 808-438-4812. Email sbct_eis@usace.army.mil.

The Army wants to expand the 109,000-acre Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) in the heart of the Big Island by 23,000-acres to train with hundreds of Stryker combat vehicles --20-ton, eight-wheeled, chariots of empire, designed for “urban terrain” to control and quickly put down “general urban unrest” in support of U.S. global empire. Stryker is not good for Hawaii or the world. It’s time to stop striking and start building a just peace.

Below are what the Army calls “significant unavoidable adverse impacts” listed in the EIS executive summary pp 52-53 that will result on the Big Island at PTA from the Stryker expansion. It should be noted that PTA has more endangered species than any U.S. Army installation in the world.

* Air quality impacts from wind erosion of areas previously disturbed by off-road vehicle maneuver activity…
* Soil loss from training activities…
* Biological impacts from fire on sensitive species and habitat…
* Biological impacts from off-road training activities on sensitive species and habitat…
* Cultural resource impacts to historic buildings (the Ke`amuku Village)…
* Cultural resource impacts to archaeological resources from range and facility construction…
* Cultural resource impacts to archaeological resources from training activities…
* Cumulative impacts to land use…
* Cumulative impacts to biological resources…
* Cumulative impacts to cultural resources…
* Cumulative impacts to human health and safety hazards…
* Environmental Justice impacts to areas of Traditional Importance…

The time has come to stand up, speak out, and non-violently resist the military desecration, destruction and occupation of Kanaka Maoli sovereign lands being used by the U.S. to desecrate, destroy and occupy other sovereign lands.

Stop Stryker! End the U.S. occupation of Hawai`i & Iraq!
