Native Hawaiians seek cultural trademark for art

Doug notes this Pacific Business News article:
A hui of Native Hawaiians wants to create a cultural trademark to protect their arts and crafts from cheap imitations or knockoffs.

The trademark would be the first of its kind in Hawaii and would be similar to protection afforded Native Americans and New Zealand's Maori artists and craftsmen.
[...]
Hale Kuai, a Native Hawaiian producers cooperative, [will] study models for using a cultural certification trademark, which certifies the authenticity of cultural arts products.

The group recently received a $74,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

The Hale Kuai study group plans to make recommendations by the middle of next year for a model cultural certification trademark program and will determine whether to seek state legislation to enforce the trademark.
[...]
The hui plans to hold its first public meeting for the Native Hawaiian arts community on Oahu in December. It will listen to practitioners statewide to find out what they need and want, as well as gathering comments and opinions of the business and legal communities and retailers who sell Native Hawaiian works.

Definitely an issue we are facing with our hale ku'ai in Kipahulu where we are presenting authentic cultural crafts handmade by local artisans.

Update 11/22: Position opening for project coordinator for this study.
