POSITION TITLE: PROJECT COORDINATOR
PROJECT: NATIVE HAWAIIAN CULTURAL TRADEMARK STUDY
SPONSORS: Office of Hawaiian Affairs
FISCAL ADMIN: Pa'i Foundation
PROPONENT: Hale Ku’ai Study Committee
POSITION TYPE: Independent Contractor, Half Time (20 hours a week), Weekly Salary, No Benefits
DATES OF JOB: Dec. 5, 2005 to June 30, 2006
SALARY: negotiable (approximately $15 - $25 an hour)

The Hale Ku'ai Study Committee will conduct a 7-month long study of the need for a cultural certification trademark program for distinguishing authentic Native Hawaiian cultural arts and crafts from inauthentic fakes and simulations, to promote higher-value markets for Native Hawaiian cultural arts and help improve the livelihood of cultural artisans.

The Study will proceed in two phases: (I) information-gathering, and consensus building; and (II) drafting and presentation of formal recommendations for coordinated business, legislative, and Native Hawaiian community actions. In Phase I, four public information meetings for Native Hawaiian artisans will be held in December 2005 and January 2006 in each of O'ahu, Hawai'i, Maui, and Kaua'i Counties. A combined meeting for the legislative, law and business community will be held in Honolulu in February 2006. The Study Committee will draft recommendations for a model cultural certification trademark program in March 2006, and present them at a general conference in Honolulu for the cultural arts community at large in April 2006. The Study will conclude with the drafting of its final recommendations, and release them through publication and briefings in May and June 2006.

The Project Coordinator's position will require skills to perform the following tasks:
- Coordinate with the Committee Co-Chairs, Advisory Board, Counsel, and Fiscal Sponsor, and manage 2 assistants and 3 contracted county liaisons.
- Maintain project records, data records, bookkeeping, and monthly fiscal reports
- Organize and conduct 4 information meetings, 1 large meeting, and 1 public conference in 4 counties, including handling the transcription of hearing records
- Handle publicity and press releases for Study events
- Handle publication and public briefings of the Study recommendations
