Hawaii Progressive Blog

Check out the new Hawaii Progressive Blog ... "Our aim is to build an on-line community around the historical, philosophical, and spiritual foundations of liberalism and liberal democracy. A forum and publication that discusses and advocates for the common good and common people of the Aloha State."

Update: FYI, politically, I call myself a progressive, it is the closest label that seems to apply. And yes, we're not really a state, but I think it is a progressive perspective to recognize the true history of Hawaii, I think Hawaii's history was in some ways very progressive (not the occupation part), and I'd like to see progressive values put to action in Hawaii, whether as a state/occupation or a country.

Advertiser environmental columnist Jan TenBruggencate ends his regular column in the paper, and notes progress that has been made in environmental issues since he started it in the 1980s, but says, "you'll be able to find reports on science and environment in Hawai'i at my new blog, www.raisingislands.com."

New blog: Lance Foster, Haoles for Hawaiians

New blog haolesforhawaiians.blogspot.com by Lance Foster who worked for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs as the Director of Native Rights, Land and Culture, 2003-2006. In his first post he shares his personal background (another Rocky Mountain haole married to a Hawaiian) and reason for starting the blog, and in his second post he looks at the fact that "Hawaiian" is not a race, a subject I've touched on here before. He has comments open.

Netroots, Grassroots, & the Rise of People-Powered Politics

Outside of Hawaii's issues that I focus on here, I also follow U.S. politics through several of my favorite progressive blogs, the one the I visit the most regularly being DailyKos. DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas Zúniga and Jerome Armstrong, who blogs at MyDD, have authored a new book entitled Crashing the Gate: Netroots, Grassroots, and the Rise of People-Powered Politics about taking back and winning with the Democratic Party from the bottom up and using the Internet. I haven't read the book yet, but it seems to be getting great reviews (and Markos was quite good last night on The Colbert Report). Anyway, Bill McKibben has written a review in The New York Review of Books that is well worth reading, to get some insight into the role and influence of blogging in U.S. politics and media.

Bloggers to report at political convention

The Advertiser picked up an AP story about bloggers reporting at this summer's poltical convention(s)...

A handful of scribes publishing in a newer medium will join the thousands of newspaper, magazine and broadcast journalists at this summer's political conventions.

They'll be blogging.

The Democrats are holding true to their "party of inclusion" billing vis-a-vis the online chroniclers, whose Web logs have leapt in popularity this year as political junkies increasingly get their fix with mouse clicks.

Democrats say they'll offer media credentials to a handful of bloggers. The Republicans say they've yet to decide what to do about them — credentialing deadlines passed with no announcement on whether bloggers could even apply.

GOP spokesman Leonardo Alcivar said details are being worked out, but some analysts believe the party is wary of bloggers, who tend to be less predictable than mainstream journalists.

Also, in his Advertiser "Byte Marks" column, Burt Lum talks about new technologies available to support blogging, with features to make it easier than ever.

Update on Fahrenheit 9/11 in Hawaii Theaters

According to f911tix.com, Fahrenheit 9/11 will be opening next Friday 6/25 at the following theaters:

ConAm Victoria Ward 16 in Honolulu
Signature Dole Cannery 18 in Honolulu
ConAm Kaahumanu 6 in Kahului, Maui
ConAm Aikahi Twins in Kailua, Oahu

Please call Consolidated Theatre's Honolulu corporate office at 808-594-7034 x3 and thank them for showing it, and encourage them not to buckle to the forces of censorship. (Brutally ironic, isn't it, that a movie named after Ray Bradbury's book Fahrenheit 451, which is about censorship, is being censored?)

FAHRENHEIT 911 in Hawaii Theatres

Here is the official word from Signature Theatres via an email:

FAHRENHEIT 911 will open at 500+ screens on June 25th in the larger US markets. The distributors plan to add additional screens mid-July, then more later. At this time our Dole Cannery and Pearl Highlands locations are scheduled to open it on the 25th. Windward will probably be later in the summer.

Air America Radio in Hawaii

Star-Bulletin columnist Erika Engle noted Friday that "Liberal talk radio network Air America Radio and its front man Al Franken debuted yesterday afternoon on KUMU-AM 1500 in Honolulu, KAOI-AM 1110 on Maui and KQNG-AM 570 on Kauai." Read her piece for details on times and such. I listen on the web sometimes, and encourage folks to tune in.

Not related directly to Hawaiian issues, except that perhaps some independence advocates will call up the show or comment in their blog sometime and introduce Air America listeners to the truth about Hawaii... the other occupation.

Guardian's Blog Pick of the day

HawaiianKingdom.info was picked as The Guardian Unlimited's Blog Pick of the Day today! Mahalo!

Although the question of "Should Hawaii be granted independence from the US?" isn't quite framed correctly. There is a strong argument for the continuity of Hawaii's independent political status under prolonged illegal military occupation by the United States. The real question is: Should the U.S. end its occupation of Hawaii?

For those who are visiting for the first time and unfamiliar with the issue, please visit HawaiianKingdom.org for a good background and historical documentation of the U.S. occupation of Hawaii.

Also, for our British visitors, learn about the central role Great Britain played in the recognition of Hawaii's independence, and the several treaties between the two countries.
