A personal conversation with Akahi Nui raises no red flags

The Maui News Letter to the Editor
Sunday, May 09, 2004

So-called Majesty Akahi Nui's invitation to the public to speak with him about the future of Hawaii inspired a few interesting letters May 5.

The first labeled him, without reservation, a "wannabe despot" with a "crummy" Web site and called him "paranoid." The second letter admirably said, "If you really are the king of Hawaii, that's cool and I'd like to hear more about it. If you really aren't, then don't waste the newspaper space."

I went to meet this king guy May 5 to see for myself what he's about.

I introduced myself as the photographer I now am, but my qualifications, if any, for doing this investigation realistically and without bias include 20 years of practice as a psychotherapist diagnosing and treating some of the most abused kids in the U.S. along with many of their abusers. Also, I had no connection with him and next to no information about him or his claim to be the rightful heir of the title of king. My goal was simply to get educated about sovereignty. My observations may be in error and are certainly incomplete, but I'll tell you what I saw.

In the 1 hour and 30 minutes we met, I saw no indication of paranoia or other mental illness and did not see or feel any malicious intent whatsoever. I did see, however, clear indications of persistent social and spiritual concern along with a highly intelligent mind. His intellect was expressed in Hawaiian form and yet seemed able to grasp the complexity of an enormous stack of genuine-looking legal documents regarding his title and sovereignty. He demonstrated excellent listening skills, and appeared respectful and patient with those in his service. He showed warm and gentle family interactions. His pet pit bull lay calmly at my feet.

We should first determine if he is telling the truth at all about being the king of Hawaii, and only then proceed to the secondary issues of his policies and personality, disagreeing as we might with them.
