Who's twisting history?

In an Advertiser letter, Ken Conklin replies to Isaac Harp's April 29 response to Conklin's commentary in honor of President Sanford Dole's 160th birthday, accusing Harp of twisting history. One of his two points is one that I first mentioned here, that Harp referred to Cleveland as "his president" (Dole's president) when in fact Dole was a Hawaiian national and Cleveland was not his president. After I posted that here, Harp acknowledged to me on the side that he was mistaken in putting it that way and meant it more as a matter of loyalty than nationality (I'm paraphrasing) because Dole committed treason against the Kingdom and advocated annexation in hopes that the U.S. president would in fact become "his president." But Conklin draws from that the conclusion that "Today's sovereignty activists try to deny that non-natives were full members of the kingdom, just as today's Akaka bill excludes us who have no native ancestry." That is just not accurate. Pretty much all independence supporters I know (as opposed to Akaka bill supporters), Harp included, recognize that Hawaii was a multiracial country, that sovereignty is a political issue and not a racial one, and that Hawaiian nationality was and will be defined inclusively. Harp made a mistake in how he stated it, but Conkin's over-generalized response is an even bigger piece of misinformation. See my original post on Conkin's commentary for more on his twisting of history.
